YU grupa is a legendary rock band from Belgrade, formed in 1970 by brothers Dragi and Žika Jelić. From the outset, the band blended elements of progressive rock, hard rock, and folk rock, crafting a sound marked by powerful guitars, melodic lines, and regional folk influences.
Before founding YU grupa, the Jelić brothers had already built musical experience in bands such as Albatros, Alasi, Beduini, Siluete, and Džentlmeni, which provided them with a mature foundation and a broad musical palette. Early singles like “Nona” and “Tatica” launched them into the domestic rock scene. Over time, albums including YU grupa (1973), Kako to da svaki dan?, YU zlato, and Među zvezdama became cornerstones of Yugoslav and Serbian rock history.
YU grupa chose November 29—the former Republic Day in Yugoslavia—as their symbolic founding date, which they celebrate every year with a special concert in Belgrade. This date has become entwined with their legacy and bond with their audience.
Despite lineup changes over the decades, Dragi and Žika Jelić remain the core and driving force of the band, preserving its style and identity. To this day, YU grupa has released numerous studio albums, live records, and singles, and continues to perform and create music for new generations.
