YĪN YĪN is a Dutch psychedelic funk/disco band from Maastricht, formed in 2017. Its core members are Kees Berkers (drums, percussion, synthesizer), Yves Lennertz (guitar, bass, synth, vocals), Remy Scheren (bass guitar), and Robbert Verwijlen (keys, synth). Their music blends psychedelic rhythms from Southeast Asia, danceable disco grooves, funk, electronic textures, and surf-inspired motifs.
They released their debut album The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers in 2019, establishing a unique sound that draws from Thai-funk and psych tradition. In 2022, their second album The Age of Aquarius broadened their sonic palette with more synth use, dancefloor sensibilities, and experimental ambitions. Their third album, Mount Matsu (2024), marks a maturation in style — with analog guitar tones, vintage synthesizers, both instrumental and vocal passages, and explorations into disco, city pop, and traditional Asian music.
YĪN YĪN’s music is often instrumental or features vocals as texture rather than center stage, giving listeners space to immerse in rhythm and atmosphere. Their live performances are known for their energy, visual presence, and capacity to engage audiences in both dance and ambient, psychedelic settings.
Today, YĪN YĪN is considered one of the more distinctive acts in the global psych-pop / psych-funk / world fusion arena, especially for how they merge Asian traditional sounds with contemporary dance elements and experimental approach. They act as a bridge between nostalgia and innovation, between East and West, between dance music and artistic exploration.
