Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in human history, with origins dating back over five thousand years. Early depictions come from Sumerian civilizations, where wrestling is mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh. In Ancient Egypt, tombs in Beni-Hasan feature hundreds of wrestling scenes, indicating the early establishment of rules and referees. In Ancient Greece, wrestling held great cultural significance. It was considered both a science and a key part of physical education. It became part of the Olympic Games in 708 BC. Milo of Croton, one of the most famous wrestlers, won numerous Olympic titles and became a symbol of excellence. During the Roman Empire, wrestling was popular among the military and aristocracy. Although the Olympic Games were abolished in the 4th century, wrestling survived through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, continuing to evolve. Today, the sport is governed by United World Wrestling. The organization oversees competitions in various wrestling styles and promotes the sport through education, training programs, and international events.
