The Dillinger Escape Plan (DEP) was formed in 1997 in Morris Plains, New Jersey, by guitarist Ben Weinman together with vocalist Dimitri Minakakis, drummer Chris Pennie, and bassist Adam Doll. From its inception, the band was noted for its technical complexity, dissonant sound, and rhythmic unpredictability—qualities that defined the mathcore genre.
Their debut album, Calculating Infinity (1999), became an underground classic, revered for its relentless pace and inventive soundscapes. When vocalist Minakakis departed, DEP performed as an instrumental act before collaborating with avant-garde legend Mike Patton on the Irony Is a Dead Scene EP, which incorporated electronic and grindcore textures.
With Greg Puciato as their new vocalist from 2004, DEP embraced a broader sonic spectrum. Miss Machine marked a shift toward melodic experimentation. Ire Works (2007) introduced glitch elements, tighter song structures, and unconventional instrumentation. Option Paralysis (2010) further explored complex themes, while One of Us Is the Killer (2013) offered a more introspective edge. Their final album, Dissociation (2016), was crafted as a powerful artistic statement marking their departure, closing their career while at the creative peak.
Known for their frenetic and unpredictable live shows—which sometimes bordered on physically intense—DEP navigated numerous lineup changes, with Weinman remaining the sole constant member. The band concluded their original run in 2017, ending on a high note with unwavering artistic integrity.
In a surprising turn, DEP reunited in 2024 for a one-off Brooklyn concert to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Calculating Infinity. Original members Dimitri Minakakis, Ben Weinman, Liam Wilson, and Billy Rymer returned to the stage, proving that DEP’s musical impact and creative spirit continue to resonate.
