The Darkness is a British hard/glam rock band formed in 2000 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. Known for their flamboyant style, tongue-in-cheek theatrics, and high-energy sound, the band originally consisted of brothers Justin Hawkins (vocals, guitar) and Dan Hawkins (guitar), alongside bassist Frankie Poullain and drummer Ed Graham.
Their breakthrough came with the 2003 debut album Permission to Land, featuring the anthemic hit “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” The album catapulted them to fame, earning three Brit Awards for Best Group, Best Rock Act, and Best Album. However, after intense touring, the band faced turbulence—Poullain departed in 2005, their follow-up album flopped, and Justin Hawkins left the band in 2006 due to personal struggles.
In 2011 they reunited with the original lineup and released Hot Cakes in 2012, reaffirming their place in rock. They followed with Last of Our Kind (2015), Pinewood Smile (2017), Easter Is Cancelled (2019), Motorheart (2021), and most recently, Dreams on Toast in early 2025, proving they still captivate large venues and top the charts.
The Darkness are distinguished by their theatrical performances, Justin’s soaring falsetto, and humorous lyrics. Despite personal and industry setbacks, their charisma, creativity, and loyal fanbase have cemented their lasting legacy in rock music.
