Tenacious D is the American comedy rock duo formed by actor-musician Jack Black and guitarist Kyle Gass in 1994 in Los Angeles. Initially meeting in the acting troupe The Actors’ Gang, their relationship evolved through music—after discarding a serious, overly earnest song, they embraced humor and developed their trademark concept of singing “the greatest song in the world,” which eventually became their cult hit Tribute.
In the late 1990s, they hosted a sketch-and-song TV series on HBO that laid the foundation for their distinct style, blending absurdist comedy with heavy rock—what critics have coined "mock rock." Their self-titled debut album dropped in 2001, featuring the legendary Dave Grohl on drums. Tribute elevated them to cult status and helped them build a wide listener base.
They toured as opening acts for major rock bands, and in 2006, they made the film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, accompanied by its soundtrack album. The film underperformed at the box office, but the accompanying tour—including a stop at Madison Square Garden—was a tremendous success.
In 2012, they returned with Rize of the Fenix, a tongue-in-cheek album addressing their earlier film’s commercial failure. In 2018, they launched an ambitious animated web project, Post-Apocalypto, simultaneously releasing the album of the same name.
Looking ahead, they are set to release a live video album, The Complete Master Works 3, featuring their 2023 O2 Arena performance, slated for October 2025.
Tenacious D began as a joke about being the greatest band in the world—and in an artful twist, their comedy made them legends. Their live shows remain packed with musical skill, spontaneous fun, and theatrical flair—just as fans expect and love.
