Tame Impala is an Australian psychedelic music project initiated in 2007 in Perth by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. While often perceived as a band, Tame Impala is primarily Parker's solo project in the studio, where he writes, records, and produces all the music. However, for live performances, he is joined by a band consisting of Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesizer), Jay Watson (synthesizer, guitar, vocals), Cam Avery (bass guitar, vocals), and Julien Barbagallo (drums, vocals). Rafael Lazzaro-Colon joined as a percussionist in 2019 .
Parker founded Tame Impala with the aim of reviving classic psychedelia through contemporary soundscapes. The debut album Innerspeaker (2010) introduced a sound that was both nostalgic and innovative. The follow-up, Lonerism (2012), was critically acclaimed and nominated for a Grammy, with the track “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” becoming one of its signature songs. In 2015, he released Currents, an album that marked a significant shift towards electronic and R&B elements, featuring introspective lyrics. This album achieved cult status and brought him international fame.
After Currents, Parker collaborated with numerous artists, including Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Travis Scott, and Mark Ronson. He also produced music for the band Pond, which shares members who have occasionally collaborated with Tame Impala. In 2020, he released the singles “Patience” and “Borderline,” signaling a new direction for Tame Impala.
In 2025, Tame Impala celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Currents album, and Parker has announced the release of a new album. During the summer of 2025, he performed a surprise DJ set in Barcelona, further fueling anticipation for new material .
