Sólstafir is an Icelandic post-metal band formed in 1995 in Reykjavík. Their name translates to "sun rays" in Icelandic, reflecting their ability to convey emotion and the atmosphere of Icelandic landscapes through music. The band was founded by Aðalbjörn "Addi" Tryggvason (vocals, guitar), Halldór Einarsson (bass), and Guðmundur Óli Pálmason (drums), with later members including Svavar Austmann, Sæþór Maríus Sæþórsson, and Hallgrímur Jón Hallgrímsson.
Their debut album Í Blóði og Anda was recorded in 1999, while international recognition came with Masterpiece of Bitterness in 2005. Over the years, Sólstafir evolved from black metal roots to a post-rock and post-metal sound, combining atmospheric guitar lines, introspective lyrics, and strong emotional intensity. Albums such as Köld, Ótta, and Berdreyminn highlight their ability to blend metal intensity with meditative and melancholic tones, while Endless Twilight of Codependent Love explores themes of love and human dependency.
Sólstafir is renowned for energetic and emotive live performances, often accompanied by visually impressive stage setups inspired by Icelandic landscapes. The band has achieved international recognition, performing at numerous festivals and tours across Europe and the world, establishing themselves as one of Iceland’s most important contemporary post-metal acts.
