Soap&Skin is the artistic project of Austrian musician and producer Anja Plaschg, born on April 5, 1990, in Gnas, southeastern Styria. She grew up on a farm in Katzendorf, where she began playing the piano at the age of six and started violin studies at 14. During her adolescence, she developed an interest in electronic music and attended art school in Graz and Vienna, but dropped out at 18 to focus on music.
After a few performances, she earned a reputation as a "wunderkind." In 2008, she portrayed German singer Nico in the play "Nico – Sphinx aus Eis" in Berlin and Vienna, performing several songs, including "Janitor of Lunacy" from her first EP.
Her debut album, Lovetune for Vacuum, was released in March 2009 and received excellent reviews, reaching the top ten in Austria. The album also charted in Germany, Belgium, and France. Music critics hailed her as a new star of Austrian pop.
She followed with the album Narrow (2012), inspired by the personal tragedy of her father's death in 2009. The album won the European Border Breakers Award in 2010 for international success.
Her third album, From Gas to Solid / You Are My Friend, was released in 2018. Her latest album, Torso, was released in 2024.
In addition to music, Anja Plaschg is an actress. She made her film debut in 2012 with the role in Stillleben (Still Life), and in 2016, she portrayed Ingeborg Bachmann in Die Geträumten (The Dreamed Ones). She also collaborated with DJ Koze on the track "A Dónde Vas?", which became a hit.
