Slipknot is an American heavy metal band formed in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa. They are known for their aggressive music, chaotic live performances, and signature masks, which have made them instantly recognizable worldwide.
The band was founded by percussionist Shawn Crahan, drummer Joey Jordison, and bassist Paul Gray. Their first album, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (1996), was an experimental work that laid the foundation for their signature style. The follow-up album, Iowa (2001), solidified their reputation and positioned them as one of the leading nu metal and heavy metal bands. The band continued to evolve their sound, notably on Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) (2004), which included melodic and experimental elements. All Hope Is Gone (2008) further cemented their success, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts.
After the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010, the band continued to create music. .5: The Gray Chapter (2014) was dedicated to his legacy. Recent albums, We Are Not Your Kind (2019) and The End, So Far (2022), show a return to a heavier sound with new members in the lineup.
Current members include Corey Taylor (vocals), Shawn Crahan (percussion), Jim Root (guitar), Mick Thomson (guitar), Sid Wilson (turntable), Alessandro Venturella (bass), Michael Pfaff (percussion), and Eloy Casagrande (drums).
