Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Toronto and raised in Pickering, Ontario, by a Canadian mother of English descent and a Portuguese father. He also has a younger sister, Aaliyah. Shawn taught himself guitar through YouTube tutorials and rose to prominence in 2013 by posting short pop song covers on Vine.
In 2014, he signed with Island Records and released his debut single, “Life of the Party,” becoming the youngest artist to debut in the Top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100. After a brief musical break, Shawn released his fifth album, Shawn, in November 2024. This intimate folk-pop record explores self-reflection and mental health struggles. Lead singles include "Why Why Why," "Isn't That Enough," "Nobody Knows," and the heartfelt "Heart of Gold," which he wrote in memory of a childhood friend lost to overdose.
