Helen Folasade Adu, known professionally as Sade, was born on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her father was a Nigerian economics professor, and her mother an English nurse. After her parents’ separation, she moved with her mother to England at the age of four. Raised in Essex, she later studied fashion design at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, also working as a model.
Her first significant step into music came when she joined the jazz-funk group Pride in the early 1980s. From that project, a smaller lineup emerged, forming the band Sade in 1983. Their debut album, Diamond Life (1984), achieved global success with hits such as “Smooth Operator” and “Your Love Is King.” This was followed by acclaimed albums Promise, Stronger Than Pride, Love Deluxe, Lovers Rock, and Soldier of Love.
Sade is celebrated for her unique style, blending soul, jazz, R&B, and pop with her signature velvety vocals. Her sophisticated, emotive delivery has earned her multiple Grammy Awards and worldwide album sales exceeding 50 million.
Known for her private nature, Sade rarely appears in the media and is respected for her authenticity. She has a son, Izaak Theo Adu, to whom she publicly expressed support after his coming out as a trans man. Following an extended hiatus, she returned with new music, reaffirming her place as a timeless musical icon.
