Portugal. The Man is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Wasilla, Alaska, currently based in Portland, Oregon. The lineup consists of John Gourley, Zachary Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, Eric Howk, and Zoe Manville. Gourley and Carothers met in high school and began collaborating musically long before officially forming the band.
In their early years, the band released several albums through smaller and independent labels, experimenting with styles such as alternative rock, psychedelia, indie, and experimental music. Their creative curiosity and ambition for making provocative and meaningful music eventually led to a contract with a major label, which expanded their reach and production capacities.
Their major breakout came with the single “Feel It Still”, a track that achieved global success, award recognition, and broad radio play. Following that, the album Woodstock solidified their artistic identity – combining catchy melodies, experimentation, and lyrical content that often reflects cultural and social commentary.
Portugal. The Man are noted for their dynamic live performances, evolving sound, and refusal to be confined to a single style. Throughout their career, they have continuously explored and innovated, bringing together different influences. They are also recognized for their social engagement: addressing environmental issues, human rights, and community concerns, demonstrating that music can be a force for both artistry and change.
