Placebo is a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal. They completed their lineup soon afterward with a drummer and released their debut album in 1996.
The band gained prominence in 1997 with the hit single "Nancy Boy," notable for its provocative stance on gender and sexuality. Placebo stood out due to Molko's androgynous image and lyrics exploring mental health, sexuality, and drug use. Their second album, Without You I’m Nothing (1998), brought significant international success and solidified their presence on the global stage.
Over the years, the band released several albums including Black Market Music (2000), Sleeping with Ghosts (2003), Meds (2006), Battle for the Sun (2009), Loud Like Love (2013), and Never Let Me Go (2022). Following lineup changes, including the departure of several drummers, Placebo has functioned as a duo since 2015 with additional touring and studio musicians.
They are known for their dynamic live performances, melodic guitar work, and emotionally raw songwriting. While never achieving massive commercial success in the U.S., Placebo has had a lasting influence on alternative rock and inspired numerous newer artists. Their enduring discography and dedicated fanbase attest to their artistic relevance.
