Megadeth is an American thrash metal band formed in 1983 in Los Angeles by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine after his departure from Metallica. The band is known for its complex guitar work, fast tempos, and lyrics focused on war, politics, and society.
Their debut album, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, was released in 1985 and quickly gained attention in the underground metal scene. The follow-up, Peace Sells... but Who’s Buying?, established them as one of the key bands of thrash metal. Albums such as Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction brought them international success and critical acclaim.
Throughout their career, Megadeth went through numerous lineup changes, with Mustaine remaining the central figure and main songwriter. The band is also known for its mascot, Vic Rattlehead, who features prominently on album covers and live visuals.
After a short hiatus in the early 2000s due to Mustaine's arm injury, the band returned with renewed energy and a string of successful releases. In later years, they embraced a blend of classic thrash roots and modern production. Their 2022 album The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead! marked a strong return and reinforced their relevance in the current metal scene.
With millions of albums sold and numerous accolades, Megadeth has made a lasting impact on heavy metal and is considered one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax.
