Marko Tolja was born on July 3, 1984, in Rijeka, Croatia, into a musical family—with an uncle who was part of the iconic Croatian group Denis & Denis. Raised with a love for jazz, swing, and pop, he learned to sing by listening to idols like Frank Sinatra and Oliver Dragojević, despite never taking formal vocal lessons. His musical education included piano and guitar training in a dedicated music school.
From 2001 to 2006, Tolja sang with traditional klapa groups before launching a solo career in 2006 with the album Stare dobre stvari. He quickly received national recognition, winning a Porin award for Best New Artist and releasing the album Vrijeme briše istinu. Tolja gained further visibility by winning Croatia's Dancing with the Stars in 2011 alongside Ana Herceg, after which he became a sought-after mentor in music TV shows.
His singer-songwriter album Ljubav u boji (2012) brought critical acclaim, and his Christmas album Božić u kazalištu earned him Porin awards in both 2010 and 2012. He released a children’s album Srca otvorena and later studio works including Tišina. His singles—such as collaborations like Sva blaga ovog svijeta and festive hits like Od Božića do Božića—were chart-toppers in Croatia.
Marko is well-known for his stage elegance, often performing in suit and tie as a gesture of respect towards his audience. His musical style blends swing, jazz, and pop, highlighted by refined vocal delivery and emotional depth.
In 2022–2023, he honored Frank Sinatra with a tribute project Dear Mr. Sinatra, collaborated with Elvis Stanić on the song Plovim, and toured Croatian venues including Lisinski. As of 2024, Tolja serves as a judge on a talent show and continues exploring new collaborations. His 2023 EP Pianissimo is considered by many to be his most introspective and sophisticated work to date.
