Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, known professionally as Luis Fonsi, was born on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At age ten he moved with his family to Orlando, Florida, where he cultivated his passion for music through piano and guitar lessons. He later earned a vocal performance scholarship from Florida State University and released his debut album Comenzaré in 1998, launching his career in Latin pop.
Over the years he rose to prominence with albums like Eterno, Amor Secreto, and Palabras del Silencio. The 2008 ballad “No Me Doy por Vencido” became a major Latin pop anthem, dominating Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for weeks. With “Aquí Estoy Yo” in 2009, he further solidified his reputation through high-profile collaborations.
Fonsi’s global breakthrough came in 2017 with “Despacito”, featuring Daddy Yankee. The remix with Justin Bieber propelled the song to unprecedented international success, making it one of the most-streamed and viewed videos in YouTube history and a defining moment for Latin music. The track earned multiple awards and record-breaking chart runs.
He continued with hits like “Échame la Culpa” (featuring Demi Lovato), “Calypso” (featuring Stefflon Don), and “Imposible” (featuring Ozuna). His 2019 album Vida and 2022's Ley de Gravedad maintained his presence in charts, and in 2024 he released El Viaje, celebrating 25 years of music with collaborations including Carlos Vives, Laura Pausini, and Jay Wheeler.
A multi-award winner—spanning Latin Grammy, Billboard Latin, and American Music Awards—Fonsi has also earned Guinness World Records accolades for “Despacito”. He concluded his milestone 25‑year tour with a final concert in Madrid in March 2025, and remains active with global live dates and philanthropic efforts, notably supporting Puerto Rico’s recovery post-Hurricane Maria and contributing to St. Jude’s “Thanks and Giving” campaign.
