“Lord of the Dance” is a spectacular dance production created and originally performed by Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley. It premiered on July 2, 1996, at Dublin’s Point Theatre. The show presents Irish stepdance in a theatrical narrative form—depicting a battle between good and evil, light and darkness, love and temptation.
The score was composed by Gerard Fahy, with Flatley leading the choreography. The stage design features raised platforms, two-level dance staging, dynamic video projections, and meticulously synchronized troupe performances. The story revolves around the titular Lord of the Dance confronting the Dark Lord, supported by clans and mythical figures such as the goddess Erin. The encore number “Planet Ireland” has become legendary, celebrated as a triumphant finale filled with communal energy.
“Lord of the Dance” became the most successful touring Irish dance production ever, seen by over 60 million people worldwide. It spawned multiple versions—Feet of Flames, Dangerous Games, and 3D adaptations—grossing over one billion dollars, outstripping many rock concert tours.
Blending traditional Irish dance with the spectacle of modern theater, the show is known for its intense emotional drive, technical precision, and ensemble theatricality.
The production continues to tour globally, with special anniversary editions and a return to Australia in 2025 featuring forty dancers, new costumes, and cutting-edge stagecraft.
