John Legend, born John Roger Stephens on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio, began playing piano at age four, inspired by his family's musical roots. A gifted student, he skipped grades and graduated high school with honors. Legend attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating magna cum laude in 1999, and led the school's a cappella group.
Early in his career, he wrote songs and played piano for Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and others. His debut album, Get Lifted (2004), released on Kanye West’s label, launched him to fame with the hit “Ordinary People” and earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Legend followed up with soaring albums such as Once Again (2006), Evolver (2008), Love in the Future (2013), and Darkness and Light (2016). He achieved global superstardom with the timeless ballad “All of Me.” His 2020 release Bigger Love celebrated love and resilience, followed by the double album Legend in 2022. In 2024, he debuted his first children's album, My Favorite Dream.
Legend became the first Black man and youngest person to reach EGOT status—winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony by 2018. He has received 12 Grammys and numerous awards across disciplines. His music blends soulful vocal delivery with elegant piano artistry and heartfelt songwriting.
Beyond music, Legend is a vocal activist: founding the Free America initiative to reform mass incarceration and launching the Show Me Campaign to support youth education. He has served as a mentor on The Voice and sits on boards of several educational organizations. Married to Chrissy Teigen with whom he has four children, Legend combines artistic excellence with social consciousness, and continues to be a guiding light in modern culture.
