Destin Choice Route, better known by his stage name JID, was born on October 31, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up as the youngest of seven siblings, his early musical environment was shaped by his parents’ collection of funk and soul, along with the sounds of the city. His nickname “JID” originated from what his grandmother called him as a jittery child.
Before fully committing to music, he played American football on scholarship, but gradually turned towards his passion for rap. He released several independent projects and mixtapes, and in 2015 dropped his DiCaprio EP—marking a turning point. In 2017, he signed with Dreamville and released his debut studio album The Never Story. That was followed by DiCaprio 2 in 2018 and The Forever Story in 2022, both reinforcing his status as an artist with technical skill, lyrical complexity, and a strong narrative voice.
JID is part of the Spillage Village collective, collaborating with peers and refining his craft through joint efforts. His musical style features rapid changes in flow, intricate rhyme schemes, and themes that delve into childhood, the experience of growing up in Atlanta, identity, and personal struggle. His 2025 album God Does Like Ugly brings forward a more personal perspective—on work, doubt, and his ongoing connection to home.
His live shows are known for intensity, presence, and emotional authenticity. Today, JID is recognized as one of the most significant voices in modern hip-hop—an artist who not only masters technical delivery but also offers depth and content that resonate beyond mere performance.
