James Hillier Blount, known as James Blunt, was born on February 22, 1974, in Tidworth, England. His childhood was marked by frequent relocations due to his father’s military career, including stays in England, Cyprus, and Germany. He was educated at prestigious schools Elstree and Harrow and later studied aerospace manufacturing and sociology at the University of Bristol, graduating in 1996.
After university, Blunt served in the British Army, achieving the rank of captain and participating in a NATO mission in Kosovo. During his military service, he wrote the song “No Bravery,” reflecting his experiences there.
In 2002, he left the military and moved to London to start his music career. His debut album, Back to Bedlam (2004), became the best-selling album of the decade in the UK, with the single “You’re Beautiful” gaining global popularity. The album sold over 12 million copies.
He subsequently released several albums including All the Lost Souls (2007), Some Kind of Trouble (2010), Moon Landing (2013), The Afterlove (2017), and Once Upon a Mind (2019). His seventh studio album, Who We Used to Be, was released in 2023 alongside a memoir titled Loosely Based on a Made-Up Story.
In February 2025, Blunt started a world tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of Back to Bedlam, with shows in Europe, North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.
Beyond music, Blunt is known for his involvement in humanitarian causes and environmental conservation. He lives in Ibiza with his wife Sofia Wellesley and their two children.
