In Flames is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 1990 in Gothenburg by guitarist Jesper Strömblad, originally as a project combining melody and brutality of death metal. The band is a pioneer of melodic death metal, known as the "Gothenburg sound," alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. Their debut album Lunar Strain was released in 1994, and a breakthrough in their career was the album The Jester Race from 1996.
Over the years, In Flames have evolved their sound, integrating elements of alternative metal, electronics, and industrial rock, while maintaining their signature melodic guitar lines. Their latest album, Foregone, was released in 2023.
The band has gained international fame and sold over two million albums worldwide. Band members have changed over time, and since 1995, vocalist Anders Fridén and guitarist Björn Gelotte have been the only consistent members.
