Hurts are an English synth-pop duo formed in Manchester in 2009, comprising singer Theo Hutchcraft and multi-instrumentalist Adam Anderson. Before forming Hurts, they collaborated in bands Bureau and Daggers from 2005 to 2008, but Hurts marked the beginning of their duo project.
Their debut singles “Wonderful Life” and “Better Than Love” launched them to fame, and their first album Happiness (2010) became a top 10 hit across Europe and achieved international sales success. Following albums include Exile (2013), Surrender (2015), Desire (2017), and Faith (2020), all earning critical acclaim and chart placements.
Hurts are known for melancholic lyrics, emotional vocals, 80s-inspired aesthetic, and visually striking live performances. Their touring history spans Europe and Asia, with immersive stage design and fashionable visual imagery. The duo’s creative process involves one member composing music, the other primarily writing lyrics and melodies, and together refining the final sound.
They gained early recognition from placing 4th in BBC’s “Sound of 2010” poll and became one of the most beloved electronic acts of the decade. In 2025, Adam Anderson stepped back from touring to prioritize mental health, while Theo continues to perform solo or with support, receiving full fan support.
