Hooverphonic is a Belgian electronic band formed in 1995 in the city of Sint-Niklaas. Initially known as Hoover, the band changed its name to Hooverphonic to avoid legal conflicts. Founding members Alex Callier (bass and programming) and Raymond Geerts (guitar) have remained central throughout the band's history, with various vocalists joining over time, including Liesje Sadonius, Geike Arnaert, Noémie Wolfs, and Luka Cruysberghs.
The group first gained international attention with their debut single “2Wicky” from the album A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular (1996), which featured in several films and TV shows. Their third album, The Magnificent Tree (2000), featured the massive hit “Mad About You,” which remains one of their most iconic tracks.
After vocalist Geike Arnaert left the band in 2008, Hooverphonic continued with new singers until her return in 2020, just before their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song “The Wrong Place.”
Hooverphonic is known for their unique sound, blending trip hop, dream pop, electronica, and orchestral pop. Their music is often cinematic, richly produced, and lyrically melancholic. Over the years, they have released a series of acclaimed albums, including Blue Wonder Power Milk, Jackie Cane, No More Sweet Music, Reflection, In Wonderland, and Hidden Stories. Their 2024 album Fake is the New Dope marked a return to a more experimental electronic style.
