Ghostpoet, born Obaro Ejimiwe in 1983 in London, is a British musician of Nigerian descent known for his genre-defying approach, blending elements of spoken word, trip-hop, alternative rock, and experimental electronica. His work is marked by introspective, often melancholic lyrics, atmospheric soundscapes, and a distinctive vocal delivery that leans more toward narration than conventional singing.
His debut album, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam (2011), earned a Mercury Prize nomination. He followed it with Some Say I So I Say Light (2013), Shedding Skin (2015), and Dark Days + Canapés (2017). Over time, his music evolved from beat-driven electronica to darker, guitar-infused sounds, moving beyond traditional genre boundaries.
With I Grow Tired But Dare Not Fall Asleep (2020), Ghostpoet offered a more politically charged and personal reflection on modern life. Around this time, he distanced himself from the “MC” or “spoken word artist” label, highlighting a broader creative identity. He has described music as a form of therapy and a tool for processing emotional complexity.
Known for emotionally resonant live performances, he has appeared at major festivals including Glastonbury and Latitude. In addition to music, Ghostpoet has explored visual art and acting, underscoring his multidisciplinary artistry.
