Foals is a British indie rock band formed in 2005 in Oxford. The founding members were Yannis Philippakis (vocals and guitar), Jack Bevan (drums), Jimmy Smith (guitar), Walter Gervers (bass), and Edwin Congreave (keyboards). Emerging from a math rock and experimental background, the band developed a unique style characterized by rhythmic energy, intricate guitar work, and emotional depth.
Their debut album Antidotes, released in 2008, received immediate attention for its fresh, danceable sound and creative production. Follow-up albums Total Life Forever (2010), Holy Fire (2013), and What Went Down (2015) solidified their position on the international music scene. Songs like “Spanish Sahara,” “Inhaler,” and “My Number” became major hits, showcasing their talent for blending intense riffs with atmospheric layers.
Foals are known for their powerful and dynamic live performances, which have earned them multiple awards and widespread acclaim. Despite lineup changes, including the departures of Gervers and Congreave, the band continued to evolve and push forward.
In 2019, they released the ambitious two-part album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost, followed by Life Is Yours in 2022 — a record that marked a more optimistic, dance-driven direction. Foals remain one of the most influential names in British alternative music, constantly exploring new sonic landscapes and expanding the boundaries of their sound.
