Flogging Molly is an Irish-American Celtic punk band formed in 1997 in Los Angeles. Led by Dublin-born Dave King, the band emerged after his stints in heavy metal acts such as Fastway and Katmandu. He and violinist Bridget Regan started performing traditional Irish music mixed with punk influence at Molly Malone’s pub every Monday night, building a dedicated following. The band’s name—Flogging Molly—derives from their relentless gigs at the pub, and plays on the phrase “flogging a dead horse.”
Their debut album Swagger (2000) burst onto the scene, followed by the critically acclaimed Drunken Lullabies (2002), which went gold. Subsequent albums—Within a Mile of Home (2004), Float (2008), Speed of Darkness (2011), Life Is Good (2017), and Anthem (2022)—showcase a blend of Irish folk instruments (fiddle, tin whistle, mandolin, accordion) with punk and rock energy.
Flogging Molly’s lyrics delve into themes of Irish history, immigration, politics, working‑class struggle, love, and resilience—with a wry sense of humor. Their style is influenced by bands like The Pogues, The Dubliners, and The Clash, as well as King’s own life experiences. They are best known for their high-energy live shows, creating pub‑like communal celebrations that resonate worldwide.
Bridget Regan—married to Dave King—is central to their sound with her vigorous fiddle and tin whistle performances. While the lineup evolved over the years, the band’s creative spirit and commitment to live music remained unwavering.
Despite canceling their 2025 tour due to Dave King’s serious health condition, Flogging Molly endures as a defining force in the Celtic punk revival and continues to inspire generations of fans with their authenticity and passion.
