Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, was born on 31 July 1963 in Bromley, Kent, England. Before revolutionizing the electronic music scene, he played bass in the British indie band The Housemartins during the mid‑1980s. After the group disbanded, Cook explored multiple musical identities with projects like Beats International, Freak Power, and Pizzaman.
In 1995, he adopted the stage name Fatboy Slim and co-founded the iconic Big Beat Boutique club nights in Brighton, which became instrumental in defining the big beat genre. His debut album Better Living Through Chemistry (1996) showcased his signature style of upbeat breakbeats, hip-hop samples, funk, and rock influences. True global fame followed with his second album, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby (1998), featuring hits like “Praise You,” “The Rockafeller Skank,” and “Right Here, Right Now.”
These singles became anthems of late ’90s dance culture, blending catchy melodies and inventive sample use. The low-budget video for “Praise You” earned multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and his live performance at the 1999 VMA show won three awards, including Breakthrough Video.
In 2002, he organized the legendary Big Beach Boutique II beach concert in Brighton, attended by over 250,000 fans and cementing his impact on music festival history. Although his last studio album, Palookaville, came out in 2004, Cook has remained a prolific DJ, performing worldwide at festivals and special events.
His 2025 autobiography reveals candid reflections on his rise to fame, struggles with addiction, creative process, and life in Brighton. Despite stepping away from album production under the Fatboy Slim alias, he continues his DJ career, sharing the energy and power of massive dancefloors. Fatboy Slim remains a pivotal figure in electronic music history, celebrated for his innovation, charisma, and genre-blending sound.
