Hayden Silas Anhedönia, who performs under the stage name Ethel Cain, is an American singer-songwriter, producer, and model known
for her distinctive blend of indie rock, gothic rock, Americana, folk, slowcore, and ambient music. Born on March 24,
1998, in Tallahassee, Florida, she was raised in the small town of Perry in a deeply religious Southern Baptist family.
Music became a central part of her life from an early age as she sang in the church choir and began studying classical
piano at the age of eight. Her upbringing in the American South and early exposure to religious music continue to shape
both her sound and artistic identity.
Before adopting the Ethel Cain persona, Anhedönia released music under several different aliases. In 2019, she
introduced Ethel Cain as her primary artistic project, creating a fictional character through whom she explores themes
of religion, family, identity, trauma, and American culture. That same year she released the EPs Carpet Bed and Golden
Age, establishing herself within the alternative music scene. Her 2021 EP Inbred, featuring songs such as “Crush,”
brought her wider critical recognition.
Cain achieved her breakthrough in 2022 with the release of her debut studio album, Preacher's Daughter. The critically
acclaimed concept album earned a devoted following through its cinematic storytelling, combining Americana, gothic rock,
ambient music, and alternative pop. Its narrative explores themes of religion, family relationships, violence, and
personal trauma, presented through richly detailed songwriting and atmospheric production. The album established Ethel
Cain as one of the most original voices in contemporary alternative music.
Alongside her music career, Cain has also worked as a model, collaborating with fashion houses including Givenchy, Miu
Miu, and Marc Jacobs, and making her runway debut during New York Fashion Week. Her visual style, inspired by Southern
Gothic imagery, American religious iconography, and vintage aesthetics, has become an integral part of her artistic
identity.
Throughout her career, she has headlined her own tours while also performing alongside artists such as Florence + The
Machine, Caroline Polachek, Boygenius, and Mitski. Today, Ethel Cain is regarded as one of the most compelling artists
