Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 in Reuver, Limburg by guitarist and growl vocalist Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever. The current lineup includes Simone Simons (lead vocals), Mark Jansen (rhythm guitar, growled vocals), Isaac Delahaye (lead guitar, backing vocals), Rob van der Loo (bass), Coen Janssen (keyboards and orchestration), and Ariën van Weesenbeek (drums and backing vocals). They fuse operatic leads and choir-backed orchestrations with heavy metal instrumentation, exploring themes from philosophy and climate change to spirituality and self-evolution.
Their debut album The Phantom Agony (2003) was followed by Consign to Oblivion (2005), The Divine Conspiracy (2007), Design Your Universe (2009), Requiem for the Indifferent (2012), The Quantum Enigma (2014), The Holographic Principle (2016), Omega (2021), and the collaborative EP The Alchemy Project (2022). Each record showcases their mastery of complex musical structures and evolving soundscapes.
Their latest album, Aspiral, was released on April 11, 2025. It includes 11 tracks and is named after a 1965 bronze sculpture by Polish artist Stanisław Szukalski, embodying themes of renewal and layered meaning. Recorded at Sandlane Studios and produced by Joost van den Broek, the album features cover art by Hedi Xandt. Special editions contain Blu-ray footage and audio from their 2024 orchestral "Symphonic Synergy" show in Amsterdam.
Pre-release singles Arcana (November 2024), Cross the Divide (January 2025), and T.I.M.E. (March 2025; standing for Transformation, Integration, Metamorphosis, Evolution) signal a blend of progressive metal, orchestral grandeur, and introspective lyricism. Critics hailed Aspiral as a landmark album in 2025, praising its emotional potency, compositional ambition, and sonic cohesion.
