Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy. They became fully realized after adding keyboardist Kevin Moore and vocalist James LaBrie.
Celebrated for their technical mastery, intricate arrangements, and fusion of metal intensity with progressive structure, they first released When Dream and Day Unite (1989), but achieved global recognition with Images and Words (1992). The hit single “Pull Me Under” became a landmark in their career.
Over the following decades, they released a series of albums that defined their genre: Awake, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought, Octavarium, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, and the self-titled Dream Theater. These works reflect their evolving sound, emotional complexity, and virtuosic performance.
Despite lineup changes—most notably drummer Mike Mangini replacing Portnoy in 2010—their identity remained intact. Their live shows are renowned for marathon performances stretching three hours, featuring extensive solos, atmospheric interludes, and varied setlists.
Recognized as a seminal force in progressive metal, Dream Theater continues to engage a dedicated global fanbase, racking up millions of album sales and touring relentlessly. They remain committed to releasing ambitious new music and delivering performances that defy conventional trends.
