Denis & Denis

Synth-pop duo Denis & Denis emerged in early 1980s Rijeka, Croatia, founded by keyboardist Davor Tolja and singer Marina Perazić. Drawing inspiration from bands like Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and Eurythmics, they pioneered synth-based pop in Yugoslavia using drum machines and sequencers, challenging perceptions of electronic music at the time. Their debut album Čuvaj se! (1984) featured cult hits such as “Program tvog kompjutera,” “Soba 23,” and “Dvadeset i osam minuta do pet,” earning acclaim as one of the region’s defining releases. The follow-up EP Ja sam lažljiva (1985) reinforced their popularity, blending catchy vocals and sequenced rhythms into synth-pop gold. In 1986, Marina Perazić left to pursue a solo career. Tolja continued with Edi Kraljić, shifting toward a pop-rock sound on the album Budi tu (1988). Denis & Denis disbanded shortly after their final shows. A reunion in 2012 celebrated 30 years since their formation, leading to a regional tour and a new lineup featuring vocalist Ruby Montanari Knez. They released the album Restart in 2013. In 2024, the group commemorated the 40th anniversary of Čuvaj se! with a landmark concert in Zagreb. Widely regarded as pioneers of Croatian synth-pop, Denis & Denis introduced an innovative, minimalist sound that blended electronic textures with melodic songwriting—an influence that continues to resonate across the ex-Yugoslav music landscape.
