Biography - Danijela Martinović
Danijela Martinović was born on 15 July 1971 in Split, and began her musical journey at age 14 in a church ensemble called “Dominik.” By age 17, she had already gained attention performing as the opening act for Vice Vukov. In 1991, she became the lead vocalist for the iconic Croatian pop band Magazin, recording three albums and becoming a fixture in the regional music scene.
Her solo career launched in 1996 with the debut album Zovem te ja, which quickly achieved platinum status. The follow-up record To malo ljubavi (1998) became the best-selling album by a Croatian female artist, selling over 100,000 copies. Her Eurovision performance at Birmingham 1998 with “Neka mi ne svane” earned Croatia a memorable 5th place, and featured a now-famous dress change moment on stage.
Her third album I po svjetlu i po mraku (1999) also earned gold-level sales. In 2001 she released Pleši sa mnom, featuring a well-loved duet with Kemal Monteno, followed in 2003 by Božić s Danijelom, a holiday album whose proceeds supported charity. Subsequent albums Oaza (2005) and Canta y baila con Danijela (2006) explored Latin-infused pop styles. In 2011 she released Unikat, including the duet “Zarobljenik uspomena” with Halid Bešlić and the song “Za tebe rođena” penned by Arsen Dedić.
At the 2012 Split Festival, her song “Brodolom” was a major success, and in 2013 she won the award for Best Stage Performance with “Capuccino.” Hits like “Iluzija” and “Dežuraj” from the late 2010s further cemented her popularity.
Renowned for her emotive vocal delivery, powerful interpretations, and charismatic stage presence, Danijela Martinović remains one of Croatia’s most influential and best-selling female artists of the past three decades.
