Cubismo is a Croatian Latin and jazz band formed in 1995 by a group of talented musicians from various local acts. The group’s frontman is percussionist Hrvoje Rupčić, and for many years the distinctive lead vocals were delivered by Venezuelan singer Ricardo Luque. The name Cubismo was inspired by Dizzy Gillespie’s song “Cu-bi Cu-bop,” reflecting the fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban music.
Their sound is a vibrant mix of salsa, Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Caribbean rhythms, driven by a powerful rhythm section, strong brass arrangements, and lively vocals. Cubismo performs both original songs in Croatian and Spanish, as well as creative renditions of Latin standards.
Over the years, the band released several acclaimed albums, including Cubismo (1997), Viva La Habana (1998), Motivo Cubano (2000), Junglesalsa (2002), Amigos (2004), and Autobus Calypso (2007). In 2020, to mark their 25th anniversary, they released Tumbao in collaboration with the Croatian Radiotelevision Jazz Orchestra, merging their rhythmic Latin core with big band energy.
Cubismo is widely celebrated for their high-energy live performances that often turn into spontaneous dance parties, engaging the audience and creating a festive atmosphere. Throughout their career, they have collaborated with both international and regional artists, including members of Buena Vista Social Club, Josipa Lisac, Oliver Dragojević, Gibonni, and Vlada Divljan.
Today, Cubismo remains the most prominent Croatian group dedicated to Latin music. For more than two decades, they have brought authentic Latin flair to stages across Europe, delivering rhythm, joy, and unforgettable performances to a broad and loyal audience.
