Božo Vrećo was born on October 18, 1983, in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina. After losing his father at the age of five, he was raised by his mother, a painter, and two sisters. He taught himself music online while formally studying archaeology in Belgrade, eventually earning a master’s degree. However, music soon became his true passion.
His first musical success came with the Sarajevo group Halka, with whom he released two albums and toured across the Balkans and Europe. In 2014, he launched his solo career with the album Moj Sevdah, followed by Pandora, Melek, Lacrimae, and Sevdahology. Božo is recognized as a rare contemporary composer and performer of new sevdalinka, creating original works inspired by this traditional genre.
His stage presence is as striking as his music—he blends masculine and feminine aesthetics through an androgynous appearance, performing in kaftans, dresses, with a beard and traditional eye makeup. He identifies as gender-fluid and uses his art to promote freedom of expression, tolerance, and love.
Božo Vrećo is known for emotionally powerful performances, impressive vocal range, and a unique blend of sevdah with jazz, blues, and soul. Beyond music, he is active as a writer, painter, fashion creator, and author of a poetic autobiographical book titled Mila, dedicated to his mother.
He currently lives and creates in Sarajevo, while his art and message transcend national, gender, and cultural boundaries.
