Blondie is an American rock band formed in 1974 in New York City by vocalist Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. The group quickly rose to prominence as pioneers of the new wave movement, blending punk energy with pop melodies, disco, reggae, and early hip-hop influences. Their early albums, Blondie and Plastic Letters, gained traction in the UK and Australia before achieving widespread success in the US with the release of Parallel Lines.
Released in 1978, Parallel Lines featured hit singles like “Heart of Glass,” “One Way or Another,” and “Picture This,” propelling the band to international fame. Subsequent albums continued to expand their musical range, with tracks such as “The Tide Is High” and “Rapture” merging reggae, pop, and early rap.
After disbanding in 1982, Blondie reunited in 1997 and resumed recording and touring worldwide. Their album Pollinator was released in 2017, and a new album is planned for release in 2025. The year 2025 also marked the passing of drummer Clem Burke, a key figure in the band’s sound and live presence.
With over 40 million records sold globally, Blondie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Their music remains influential for its unique fusion of genres, striking visual identity, and Debbie Harry’s iconic voice.
