Baroness is an American progressive sludge metal band formed in 2003 in Savannah, Georgia. Founded and fronted by John Baizley—who also creates the band’s artwork—the group has gone through various lineup changes over the years. The current lineup includes Gina Gleason (guitar), Nick Jost (bass), and Sebastian Thomson (drums). Their sound blends heavy riffs, progressive structures, and rich melodies.
Their discography follows a color-themed concept, marking both musical and thematic progression: Red Album (2007), Blue Record (2009), Yellow & Green (2012), Purple (2015), Gold & Grey (2019), and Stone (2023). The debut album established their signature style, while Blue Record introduced greater melody and dynamic range. Yellow & Green explored experimental tones, and Purple reflected personal struggles, including the aftermath of a serious bus crash in 2012.
Stone marked a new chapter, with a rawer, more focused sound and introspective themes. The band is also recognized for its strong visual identity, as Baizley designs each album’s cover art, making every release a unified audio-visual experience.
Over the years, Baroness has built a loyal fanbase. Their live performances are known for their intensity and emotional depth. In 2025, the band will perform full live renditions of Red and Blue albums at a special festival appearance, celebrating key moments in their musical journey.
