Arch Enemy is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1995 in Halmstad by guitarist Michael Amott, formerly of Carcass and Carnage. They began as a doom-death outfit, releasing their debut album Black Earth in 1996, which became a genre staple. Their follow-ups Stigmata (1998) and Burning Bridges (1999) solidified their sound, with bassist Sharlee D’Angelo and drummer Daniel Erlandsson completing the classic lineup.
In 2000, original vocalist Johan Liiva left and was replaced by Angela Gossow, leading to a series of acclaimed albums including Wages of Sin (2001), Anthems of Rebellion, and Doomsday Machine. Gossow stepped aside in 2014, and Canadian frontwoman Alissa White‑Gluz took over, debuting on War Eternal and maintaining momentum with Will to Power (2017) and Deceivers (2022).
2025 sees the release of their twelfth studio album, Blood Dynasty, the band’s first with guitarist Joey Concepcion, followed by global touring including a major North American leg and a European run later in the year.
Arch Enemy merges technical guitar virtuosity, melodic riffs, and powerful growls into heavy, brutal compositions. Their live shows are renowned for intense performances, instrumental exchanges, and theatrical visuals. Remaining true to their underground roots, the band has grown into one of the leading forces in international metal.
