Aphex Twin is the stage name of Richard David James, a British musician, producer, and DJ originally born in Ireland and raised in Cornwall. In the late 1980s, he began experimenting with custom-built analog synthesizers and sound manipulation techniques. His debut EP Analogue Bubblebath (1991) and the landmark album Selected Ambient Works 85–92 (1992) laid the foundation for modern ambient techno and greatly influenced the genre.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he released acclaimed works including …I Care Because You Do, Richard D. James Album, and the singles Come to Daddy and Windowlicker, which elevated him to a cult icon in electronic music. His 2001 album Drukqs, along with releases under aliases like AFX, Caustic Window, and Polygon Window, further showcased his experimental range.
After a long hiatus, he returned in 2014 with Syro, earning a Grammy Award. Subsequent EPs like Cheetah (2016), Collapse (2018), and Blackbox Life Recorder 21f (2023) reinforced his reputation as an innovator. James co-founded the influential Rephlex Records, pioneering the "braindance" movement. His creative process, which includes lucid dreaming, combined with technical mastery and a distinctive aesthetic, has made him one of the most intriguing figures in electronic music.
Critics often liken him to the "Mozart of modern music"—a limitless experimenter and virtuoso composer—whose work continues to shape contemporary soundscapes.
