Young the Giant is an American indie rock band formed in Irvine, California, in 2004. The group was founded by high school friends, and its current lineup consists of Sameer Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass), and François Comtois (drums). In their early years, the band performed under the name The Jakes before adopting the name Young the Giant.
The band signed with Roadrunner Records in 2009 and gained international recognition with their self-titled debut album Young the Giant in 2010. The album featured the successful singles My Body, Cough Syrup, and Apartment, all of which charted on the US Alternative Songs chart and helped establish the band as one of the leading new acts in indie rock.
Their musical style blends indie rock, alternative rock, and indie pop, characterized by melodic hooks, atmospheric arrangements, and energetic live performances. Critics have often described their sound as a balance between accessible modern rock and more experimental influences drawn from diverse musical backgrounds.
Throughout their career, Young the Giant has released several successful albums, including Mind over Matter (2014), Home of the Strange (2016), Mirror Master (2018), and the conceptual project American Bollywood (2022). Home of the Strange notably explored themes of identity, immigration, and the experiences of second-generation Americans, reflecting the backgrounds of several band members.
The band is also known for extensive touring and appearances at major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Sasquatch!. Their combination of emotional songwriting and strong stage presence has earned them a dedicated international audience and recognition as one of the most notable American indie rock bands of their generation.
