Widowspeak is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2010. The group was founded by Molly Hamilton (vocals and guitar) and Michael Stasiak, later joined by guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, who remains a core member alongside Hamilton.
The band originated from the long-standing friendship between Hamilton and Stasiak, who had known each other since their teenage years in Washington state. After moving to Brooklyn, they began collaborating with Thomas and developing their distinctive sound.
Their self-titled debut album Widowspeak (2011) received critical acclaim, while the single “Harsh Realm” gained wider exposure, including placement in the television series American Horror Story.
Following extensive touring, lineup changes led to Hamilton and Thomas becoming the central creative force behind the band. Their second album Almanac (2013) was recorded in a rural setting in the Hudson River Valley, influencing the band’s atmospheric direction.
Widowspeak has released several studio albums, including All Yours (2015), Expect the Best (2017), Plum (2020), and The Jacket (2022), demonstrating continuous artistic evolution.
Their sound blends indie rock, dream pop, shoegaze, and elements often described as “cowboy pop,” characterized by moody textures, ethereal vocals, and minimalist arrangements.
Today, Widowspeak is regarded as a notable act within the contemporary indie scene, known for its introspective approach and distinctive atmospheric style.
