Tedi Spalato, born Tadija Bajić in 1954 in Split, Croatia, is a singer-songwriter deeply rooted in Dalmatian musical tradition. Raised in a musically inclined family, he received his first lessons at home and honed his craft under mentors like Marinko Katunarić and Ljubo Stipišić. Early in his career, he performed with the ensemble Anima, where he developed a love for soul and jazz. He later became a studio musician and, in 1982, joined the band More, which included future prominent Croatian artists.
Tedi launched his solo career in 1985, simultaneously performing in operettas and ballets at the Croatian National Theatre in Split. His unique musical style merges classic Dalmatian song, chanson, jazz, and world music, paired with intimate and poetic lyrics delivered with gentle guitar and a warm, soulful voice.
He has produced timeless hits such as “Sve ću preživit,” “More snova,” “Dalmatino, povišću pritrujena,” “Lipote gladan, ljubavi žedan,” and “Zar je voljeti grijeh.” His performances—often accompanied by acoustic guitar and minimalist arrangements—resonate with the authenticity, emotional depth, and melodic charm of Dalmatia. Critics and listeners alike have praised his heartfelt delivery and his willingness to incorporate jazz improvisations and genre-blurring elements.
Over the years, Tedi has been a frequent presence at music festivals, particularly the Split Festival, where he has performed regularly since the 1980s. Collaborations with Croatian music icons such as Gibonni, Oliver Dragojević, Meri Cetinić, and Zorica Kondža have solidified his esteemed standing. He has earned several Porin awards, including recognition for a live album recorded in Lisinski and for vocal collaboration.
Beyond music, Tedi lives a serene life in Solin, embracing creative hobbies such as restoring musical instruments and woodworking. He finds himself deeply connected to Dalmatian heritage, yet remains a perpetually curious and evolving artist, always open to new musical ventures. It is this blend of emotional sincerity, poetic expression, and artistic openness that makes Tedi Spalato a pivotal figure in Dalmatian and Croatian music.
