Stereo MC’s are a British hip hop and electronic music group formed in London in the mid-1980s. The band was founded by Rob Birch, also known as Rob B, and Nick Hallam, later joined by Cath Coffey and Owen If. The group became known for blending hip hop, electronic music, house, funk, and alternative dance influences, creating a distinctive sound that gained recognition both in the UK and internationally.
They released their debut album 33-45-78 in 1989, but achieved greater success in the early 1990s with the albums Supernatural and especially Connected in 1992. The title track Connected became their biggest international hit, driven by infectious grooves, dance rhythms, and Rob Birch’s recognizable vocal delivery. The album also featured successful singles such as Step It Up, Creation, and Ground Level.
Stereo MC’s were among the artists who successfully bridged hip hop culture with the electronic dance scene at a time when genre boundaries were increasingly blending. Their music combined hip hop-inspired rhythms with house production, funk basslines, and elements of British club culture.
Throughout their career, the group collaborated with various artists and producers while performing at major festivals and international tours. They became known for energetic live performances and a lasting presence within alternative and dance music culture.
Although their peak commercial success came during the 1990s, Stereo MC’s continued releasing music and performing in the decades that followed. Their influence remains important within British electronic and alternative music, while Connected is still regarded as one of the defining dance tracks of its era.
