Soulfly is a Brazilian-American metal band formed in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona, led by Max Cavalera, former member of Sepultura. The band was formed after Cavalera left Sepultura, and its name reflects the belief that the souls of ancestors fly around us while we play music, inspired by indigenous spiritual practices.
Soulfly’s music is known for blending groove metal, thrash metal, death metal, and nu metal, with a strong influence of Brazilian tribal and world music. Their lyrics often explore themes of spirituality, politics, violence, and war. Their debut album, Soulfly, was released in 1998, and their latest album, Totem, came out in 2022.
The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, but Max Cavalera has remained the only constant member. Current members include Max Cavalera on vocals and guitar, Zyon Cavalera on drums, Mike DeLeon on guitar, and Chase Bryant on bass.
Soulfly has gained international recognition by performing at major festivals and is known for energetic and ritualistic live performances. Over their career, the band has built a reputation as an innovative metal act that combines aggressive sounds with ethnic and spiritual elements.
