Rodrigo y Gabriela are a Mexican instrumental guitar duo consisting of Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero. Formed in 2000 in Mexico City, they later built their career internationally after relocating to Dublin, where they performed for several years in the early stages of their development. Their music is primarily based on acoustic guitar duets, focusing on rhythm, melody, and high-energy instrumental performance without vocals.
Both musicians grew up in Mexico City in middle-class families and were exposed to a wide range of musical influences, including flamenco, jazz, and rock. A particularly strong influence on their artistic identity was heavy metal music, which played a major role in shaping their playing style and musical direction. They met as teenagers in a cultural center in Mexico City, where they bonded over their shared passion for music and began collaborating.
Their early career developed after moving to Ireland, where they performed in small venues and on the streets, gradually building a following. In 2002, they released their first widely distributed album, “re-Foc,” which was based on earlier demo recordings and marked the beginning of their professional recording career. This exposure led to further opportunities and eventually a record deal with ATO Records.
In 2006, they released their self-titled album “Rodrigo y Gabriela,” which became a major breakthrough. The album reached number one on the Irish Albums Chart and gained international recognition. It featured reinterpretations of well-known songs such as Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion,” reflecting their strong rock and metal influences. Their style blends Latin rhythms, flamenco-inspired techniques, and rock structures, delivered through highly technical acoustic guitar performances.
Over the years, the duo has released multiple studio albums and performed on major international stages. Their 2019 album “Mettavolution” earned them a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, marking a significant milestone in their career. They continued to tour and record globally, releasing their latest album “In Between Thoughts… A New World” in 2023.
