Razorlight are an English indie rock band formed in London in 2002 by singer and guitarist Johnny Borrell. Throughout the band's history, Borrell has remained its only constant member despite numerous lineup changes. The current lineup reunites Borrell with guitarist Björn Ågren, bassist Carl Dalemo, and drummer Andy Burrows, the musicians responsible for some of the group's most successful years. Emerging during the early 2000s indie rock revival, Razorlight became known for blending garage rock energy, post-punk influences, and the melodic sensibilities of British guitar music.
The band's breakthrough came with the release of their debut album, Up All Night, in 2004. The record reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and introduced audiences to singles such as “Golden Touch,” “Stumble and Fall,” and “Somewhere Else.” Praised for its youthful urgency and infectious hooks, the album established Razorlight as one of the most exciting new acts in British music. Their energetic live performances and charismatic stage presence quickly helped them build a loyal following.
Razorlight reached the peak of their commercial success in 2006 with the release of their self-titled second album, Razorlight. The album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom, while the single “America” became the band's biggest hit, topping the UK Singles Chart. Other successful tracks, including “In the Morning” and “Before I Fall to Pieces,” further cemented their status among Britain's leading rock bands. During this period, Razorlight performed alongside artists such as Oasis, Queen + Paul Rodgers, and The Rolling Stones, while appearing at major events including Reading and Leeds Festivals and Live Earth.
Their third studio album, Slipway Fires, released in 2008, showcased a more mature musical direction through songs such as “Wire to Wire.” Following several lineup changes and years of touring, the band disbanded in 2014. Razorlight returned in 2017 and released Olympus Sleeping in 2018. In 2021, the classic lineup reunited, reigniting interest among longtime fans. The band continued their revival with the release of their fifth studio album, Planet Nowhere, in 2024.
Renowned for memorable choruses, dynamic live shows, and Johnny Borrell's distinctive songwriting, Razorlight remain one of the defining British indie rock bands of the 2000s and continue to hold an important place in contemporary rock music.
