Jonas Kaufmann is widely regarded as one of the greatest tenors of his generation and one of the most distinguished opera performers of the modern era. Described by The Telegraph as “the world’s greatest tenor,” he has performed more than 70 roles at the world’s leading opera houses. The New York Times has praised his brilliant top notes, the unique combination of strength and tenderness in his voice, and his refined musicianship, while critics consistently highlight the dramatic intensity and emotional commitment he brings to every performance.
Beyond the opera stage, Kaufmann is considered one of today’s foremost interpreters of the Lieder repertoire and remains in high demand as a concert artist. His performances and recordings have earned numerous international honours, including eleven ECHO/OPUS Klassik Awards and multiple “Singer of the Year” distinctions from leading classical music publications such as Opernwelt, Diapason, and Musical America. His artistic achievements have also been recognised with the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre de l’Art et des Lettres, membership in the Bayerischer Maximiliansorden, appointment as Austrian Kammersänger in 2022, and France’s prestigious Ordre de la Légion d’honneur in 2024.
Alongside his international performing career, Kaufmann was appointed Director of the Tyrolean Festival Erl in 2024. His 2025 season opened with a revival of Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci at the Vienna State Opera, followed by an Asian tour of opera concerts and recitals, a recital tour with Diana Damrau and Helmut Deutsch featuring works by Mahler and Strauss, the title role in Wagner’s Parsifal at the Erl Festival, and a new production of I Pagliacci at the Bavarian State Opera.
The 2025/26 season began with the release of his Sony Classical album Doppelgänger, featuring Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Kerner Lieder with pianist Helmut Deutsch, together with a DVD of Schubert’s Schwanengesang staged by Claus Guth. Following performances in Puccini’s Tosca in Zurich and Paris, Kaufmann made his stage debut as Eisenstein in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus at the Vienna State Opera. During the spring he embarks on a European concert tour with soprano Malin Byström and conductor Jochen Rieder before returning to the Bavarian State Opera as Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot.
Born in Munich, Germany, Kaufmann studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München before continuing his artistic development through masterclasses with Hans Hotter, James King, and Josef Metternich. During his early engagements at the Saarbrücken State Theatre, he continued his vocal training with Michael Rhodes in Trier. Renowned for his versatility across French, German, and Italian repertoire, as well as his acclaimed recital performances, Jonas Kaufmann remains one of the most influential and celebrated classical singers on the international stage.
