Jay Park, born Park Jae-beom on April 25, 1987, in Edmonds, Washington, is a Korean-American rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, and entrepreneur. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Korean hip hop and R&B, he has built a career that successfully bridges the worlds of K-pop and independent music. Raised in the Seattle area, Park developed a passion for breakdancing and hip hop culture at an early age as a member of the b-boy crew Art of Movement (AOM).
He first rose to prominence in 2008 as the leader of the South Korean boy group 2PM after auditioning for JYP Entertainment and relocating to South Korea as a trainee. Following his debut with the group, Park left 2PM in early 2010 and returned to the United States. Later that same year, he returned to Korea and signed with SidusHQ, relaunching himself as a solo artist and establishing a distinct identity as both a singer and rapper.
His first extended play, Take a Deeper Look, released in 2011, became a major success. The single “Abandoned” earned him a victory on the television music program Music Bank, making him the first former idol group leader to achieve such recognition as a solo artist. He founded the independent labels AOMG and H1ghr Music, both of which played important roles in shaping modern Korean hip hop and supporting emerging artists. He later launched More Vision, continuing his commitment to artistic freedom and creative development.
