DJ Shadow, born Joshua Paul Davis on June 29, 1972, in San Jose, California, is an American producer, DJ, and composer known as a pioneer of instrumental hip-hop and a master of sampling. His debut album Endtroducing....., released in 1996, was entirely composed of samples and is considered one of the most influential albums in hip-hop history.
DJ Shadow began his musical career in high school experimenting with a four-track recorder. He continued as a DJ at the University of California, Davis's radio station KDVS, where he developed an experimental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax record label.
Following the success of Endtroducing....., he collaborated with various musicians and projects, including UNKLE and Quannum Projects. His work spans a wide range of genres including trip-hop, electronic music, turntablism, and experimental music.
His discography includes albums such as The Private Press (2002), The Outsider (2006), The Less You Know, the Better (2011), The Mountain Will Fall (2016), Our Pathetic Age (2019), and Action Adventure (2023). Each album showcases his ability to evolve and explore new musical territories.
He is also known for his impressive vinyl collection, boasting over 60,000 records, and his dedication to the art of sampling and creating music that bridges past and present.
