Daughter is a London-based indie trio formed in 2010 by singer-songwriter Elena Tonra, guitarist Igor Haefeli, and drummer Remi Aguilella. The band's name reflects a collective identity rather than a solo act.
Initially rooted in indie folk, their early EPs His Young Heart and The Wild Youth gained traction, especially through placements on hit TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Skins. They signed to 4AD in 2012 and released their debut full-length album If You Leave in 2013. That album went silver and earned them the AIM Independent Album of the Year award, while charting in the UK Top 20.
Their second album, Not to Disappear (2016), marked a maturation in sound and lyrical depth—blending indie rock, dream pop, and electronica to explore themes including memory, identity, and alienation. In 2023, after a lengthy hiatus, they released Stereo Mind Game, recorded across multiple cities from London to San Diego. It featured vocals by Igor Haefeli on select tracks, signaling a fresh creative direction.
In 2017, Daughter composed the score for the game Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, culminating in the standalone soundtrack album Music from Before the Storm, which showcased their signature atmospheric and emotive sensibilities.
Their music often builds from gentle, intimate beginnings into powerful crescendos, weaving introspective lyricism with expansive soundscapes. Elena Tonra’s raw and poetic vocals, combined with Igor Haefeli’s textured guitar and Remi Aguilella’s nuanced percussion, create immersive and deeply moving compositions.
Known for emotionally charged live shows, they cultivate a close connection with audiences while remaining true to their minimal, atmospheric aesthetic. Despite genre fluidity—from indie folk to ambient indie rock—Daughter’s core remains a deeply expressive and evocative musical voice.
